On January 20, Philadelphia Biblical University received a new Steinway Model D Concert Grand Piano. This instrument measures almost nine feet long and weighs 990 pounds, making it the largest piano that Steinway makes. It will be reserved as the University’s performance piano and will be used for upcoming concerts and senior recitals. This is PBU’s second Model D Concert Grand Piano; however the original is over 120 years old. The University is thankful for the generous gifts of friends and donors that made this addition possible. There will be a dedication service held in the future.
This new piano was featured in the semester’s opening Chapel service on Wednesday, January 26. To the delight of students, faculty, and staff members in attendance, Distinguished Professor and Chair, Keyboard Studies, Dr. Samuel Hsu performed his personal arrangement of “This Is My Father’s World.” After a well-deserved round of applause, Chapel attendees joined Dr. Hsu by singing “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” which has served as the University Hymn for over 65 years. Both Dr. Hsu’s performance and a recap of the semester’s opening Chapel service can be seen on PBU’s YouTube Channel.
PBU is one of only a handful of evangelical colleges or universities in the United States to be designated an All Steinway School. This designation indicates that approximately 90 percent of all pianos are Steinway. With access to the finest of pianos, PBU’s music majors are better able to perfect their God-given skills and express a full range of musical interpretation.
