In Memoriam
Charles Caldwell Ryrie, PhD
(March 2, 1925–February 16, 2016)
Just weeks before his 91st birthday, Dr. Charles Ryrie died on Tuesday, February 16, 2016, surrounded by his family and loved ones. Ryrie was a scholar, educator, author, and theologian, and he served as Cairn University’s second president from 1958 to 1962.
A notable figure within the evangelical community, Dr. Ryrie was perhaps best known as the editor of The Ryrie Study Bible (Moody Publishers). He earned his BA from Haverford College; ThM and ThD at Dallas Theological Seminary; PhD at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland; and LittD from Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (now Liberty University School of Divinity).
In addition to his work on the study Bible, Dr. Ryrie wrote over 50 books, including The Miracles of Our Lord and So Great Salvation, which won Christian Book Awards from The Evangelical Christian Publishers Association. He also served on the executive council of Camino Global for 23 years, 15 of them as the council’s president.
Dr. Ryrie is survived by his three children, Elizabeth, Bruce, and Carolyn, and his three grandchildren. At the time of his death, he resided in Dallas, TX.
